Shurgard: Consolidation and European Leadership

Founded in 1970 in the United States, Shurgard opened its first European facility in 1994 in Forest, Belgium, and has since become Europe's largest self-storage operator. Today, the company operates over 300 facilities across seven countries: Belgium, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany, and Denmark.

In April 2024, Shurgard announced the acquisition of British company Lok’nStore for £378 million, significantly expanding its presence across the UK, particularly in the Southeast and Manchester areas. This move brought Shurgard’s UK portfolio to 100 facilities, positioning it alongside its main competitor, Big Yellow.

Trends in the Belgian Self-Storage Market

The Belgian self-storage market remains relatively underdeveloped compared to rising demand, especially in densely populated cities like Brussels, Antwerp, and Liège. Smaller living spaces and the need for flexible storage solutions are driving both individuals and small businesses to seek out self-storage.

At the same time, the sector is being redefined by the integration of advanced technologies, such as AI for space management, and by the adoption of sustainable practices, including eco-friendly building materials and energy-efficient systems.

  Future Outlook

With demand on the rise and the market still taking shape, Belgium’s self-storage sector is poised for strong growth over the next few years.
Technological innovation, a focus on sustainability, and expansion strategies led by major players like Shurgard position Belgium as a key market in the future of self-storage across Europe.
